Naraina (Narayana) Pillai (Pillay) the first Indian to set foot on
Singapore in 1819,
who rose from chief clerk at the Treasury to being the first
building contractor in Singapore
with the Sri Mariamman Temple in South Bridge Road to his credit.
My Post Script :
पिल्ले
Vs. पिल्लई Vs. पिल्लै
Origin of name Pillay - this spelling came due to Hindi Writing of
Pillai as pi - ll - ae = which has only one Kombu as compared to
PILLAI which has two kombu = usually hindi writers do not add 2
kombus for Pillais
= so PILLAY is a Thiribu of PILLAI
This is what happened to many NRI Tamils migrated to Singapore,
Malaya, Fiji, Mauritius, Seychelles etc.
